| WPN Interview
with a New Couple, J and R
WPN: Well, I know from talking with
yuns at the last swim that it was your first time at any
nudist event. You must have enjoyed yourselves because
your back.
R: (wife) We sure did!
WPN: So how did you guys get interested
in naturism?
J: (husband) I first found out about
it while living in Australia as a kid. Our family would
go camping on the beach. We ended up next to a nude beach
but didn't know it. My brother and I could see people
up the beach but too far to tell they weren't wearing
any clothes. We were camping, so heck, we thought we'd
go see who was there. Maybe some more kids to play with.
So we ventured up there and they were all naked. Someone
mentioned to us that it's not polite be dressed on a nude
beach. We were welcome to stay, but we'd have to take
off our suits or we'd have to leave.
WPN: So you stayed?
J: Yes, as a matter of fact, we ended
up leaving our suits there and going back to camp naked.
We either forgot we were naked or didn't care. I don't
remember. But we went back for dinner and our mom wants
to know where our clothes where. We told her about going
up the beach and finding these naked people and joining
them. So our mother and other brothers went up the beach
to see what was going on. Maybe she just wanted to make
sure everything was ok. But we all joined them and it
was great.
WPN: Isn't it strange how nudism is
accepted in other countries, much more than here.
J: Yeah. The one popular beach there
that was always a clothed beach when I was there is now
a nude beach.
WPN: So you moved back to the USA. Did
you experience naturism here right away?
J: Well, we moved back to the States
and then back to Australia. We were over there about seven
years total I guess. We moved back here for good when
I was about ten or eleven. It's different over here. Growing
up as an Australian, we had a lot of customs and ideas
that wasn't normal over here. So we had to adjust. Like,
we had to wear uniforms to school there. If you didn't
have one, until you got one you dressed respectfully.
WPN: Isn't that funny? Look at how kids
in this country dress for school. And we think we're so
far ahead of the rest of the world in our thinking. But
the kids over there spend their weekends and vacations
with their families enjoying the sunshine and water naked,
with no shame, and kids over here wouldn't be caught dead
getting naked. They've been taught it's bad and embarrassing.
R: Right! We were talking about that
earlier today. As much as we think we're a forward thinking
country, the rest of the world is ok with nudity, but
here it's looked down upon. It's hard to understand. You're
afraid to tell people you're a nudist. That's not right.
J: Her and I were talking about her
friend...how old is she?
R: 22
J: And so we were debating on whether
to tell her and some others we're nudist. We figured how
different ones would react. There's one friend of her's
that we know he'd come for the wrong reasons. No way!
We could never tell him. We see nothing wrong with this,
yet we have to be careful who we tell.
WPN: Yeah, you know friends that would
enjoy naturism and try it if you could only tell them
about it without offending them. Your afraid they'll think
you're crazy or just want to see them naked. (LOL)
R: Exactly! (LOL)
J: I guess I've always been a nudist.
When I was thirteen or so in Palm Springs, me and a couple
friends would go up in the mountains and skinny dip and
soak up the sun. It was so relaxing. Exhilarating, I guess.
But I never tried it in a group with girls. I've always
had concerns about...natural body functions...you know,
getting excited. That would be embarrassing. But since
we've started coming here, it's never happened.
WPN: That's the hardest thing to explain
to a guy, that you don't get turned on by being naked
around naked women. It's not sexual. And their like...yeah,
right. Something wrong with you? You can't explain it.
Being naked has nothing to do with sex. But people in
this country can't understand that.
J: I read enough about it before coming
here on different web sites to make me feel relaxed about
it. I wasn't really that concerned by the time we came
to our first swim. It seems to me that maybe the first
five minutes you're aware that you're naked, and after
that you don't notice. Our first time here we couldn't
help but notice that after a while, when someone else
would come in, they seemed obvious because they hadn't
undressed yet.
R: (LOL) yeah, we talked about that.
They stood out from everyone else.
WPN: So you two are married?
R: Yes.
WPN: How long?
R: Go ahead...
J: Ahhh...twelve years. (?)
R: Yep. I always let him answer that
one, you know. (LOL)
WPN: (LOL) Don't worry J, I got the
same problem. I forget my own birthday. Are you guys nudists
at home?
R: Yes. Since we've been together. It's
just natural, with the two of us.
WPN: Any kids?
J: I have a daughter. She stays with
us often. She comfortable being naked around us, and it
doesn't bother us at all. But it's not like we stay naked
all the time when she's there. We pass in the hall after
a shower or when we first wake up, and it's normal. It's
no issue. I work with chemicals sometimes, so I undress
in the basement rather than drag them through the house.
It's no big deal for her to see me naked. Her mom wouldn't
be ok with her coming with us to a swim.
WPN: How old is she?
J: Almost nine.
WPN: So when did you guys first start
thinking about going to a nudist event?
J: About six years ago. I always wanted
to try it. Maybe in a state forest or something. Do some
nude hiking. Then I came across Whitethorn while surfing
the web, and I thought there's a place, not far, that
we can go try it for a day and if either of us don't like
it we can leave. But life and circumstances got in the
way and so it never happened. We got this running list
of things we want to do in life, and this was one of those
things. We did the ballroom dancing thing...
R: (LOL) yeah, we were like, ...next!
J: So I was surfing the net and came
across the West Penn web site. It was close to home, so
I thought what the heck and sent an email telling them
we were interested in coming to a swim.
WPN: R, you were curious too?
R: Yes! I really was.
J: I'll tell you the truth, I wasn't
sure she was all that interested.
R: Well, I said I don't know about it
with other people? It's different with just us.
J: The way she reacts to things is like
sure, I'll try anything once. She'd say ok, lets go, but
then something else would come up and she'd say darn,
we 're going to miss it. I remember one time we were going
to come for sure, but I guess we both made up excuses
and we didn't. But finally we got the coupons off the
web site and said this is it, we're going.
WPN: So I guess when you finally came
you guys had your rules like all the other couples their
first time. If one of us is uncomfortable, we're leaving.
R: Right, we're out of here! But we
came the first time and it was great! I felt comfortable.
I really did. He asked me after we left if I was ok and
I said I was really nervous at first. But after ten minutes,
I was fine. Everyone was great. I had a good time.
WPN: You guys got to try some camping.
You'll love it.
R: That's what he keeps telling me.
And I love the sun, so I can't wait!
WPN: Yeah, the swims are fun. It's a
fun thing to do in the winter time. Face it, we live around
Pittsburgh, so it's cold and there's not much to do this
time of year involving nudism. But you come to the swims
and stay in touch with friends. It's nice. And come summer
we run into each other camping and it's great. Super Bowl
at Whitethorn, it's a blast! Teams from all over the country
and Canada playing some serious volleyball. One thousand
plus nudists. Enjoying the outdoors. It's so much fun.
R: Wow!
(someone hollers to the reporter that there's only
five hot stuffed peppers left and Taz is leaving. It's
a joke, but this reporter panics! Taz's hot peppers alone
are worth the drive to a swim. The interview continues,
but at a quicker pace)
WPN: So what else do you guys do for
fun? I know you like the Steelers.
R: Actually, I'm a Greenbay fan.
WPN: Really? My wife wanted to wear
our daughters cheese head tonight for crazy hat night
but I told her she's a Steeler fan and it wouldn't be
right.
R: Shucks, I should have worn mine!
WPN: So what else do you do?
J: I play deck hockey. We go to karaoke
once in a while. I play the drums.
WPN: Is there anyone else, like friends
or coworkers, that you've told you're nudist?
R: My girl friend I told you about earlier.
We invited her out for dinner with us before we came here
tonight. J asked what I was going to tell her if she asked
what we're doing later. So when she did, I told her we
were going to a swim club we visit. I think it went over
her head at the time, but I'm sure when she thinks about
it she'll be asking about it. I'm just going to tell her
we're nudist. I sure she'll be fine with it. Now my mother,
she'd go off her rocker. My family is very old fashion.
They wouldn't get it.
J: You know what I just realized? You
asked us what we like to do. I like to play hockey, play
drums, I ran a marathon last year and I'm going to do
another one this summer...
R: And I watch you do all of this (LOL).
J: Yeah. And this is one thing we both
like and do together.
R: That's right!
WPN: I think that's the way all couples
feel about it. Anything else you guys want to say?
R: I want to get back in the pool!
WPN: I'm going to grab a hot pepper
before they're gone. Thanks for spending time telling
us your
